Hallmark Doubles Production, Plans 30 Original Flicks in ‘08

The network known for tearjerker chick flicks is making its greatest investment in programming to date, planning to nearly double its slate of 17 original dramas from last year to produce 30 original movies this year.

In addition to boosting its original fare, the network is completing a library acquisition of 99 classic films from Disney-ABC Domestic Television. Titles include The Shaggy Dog, Old Yeller, The Parent Trap and Flubber.

The Hallmark Channel, serving the second-oldest demographic on TV - with a median age of 64, according to MediaVest research - has the best commercial-retention numbers of any ad-supported cable network, as the older audience is less likely to fast-forward through commercial breaks, writes Mediaweek.

Hallmark Channel was the 12th most-watched ad-supported cable channel of 2007, with an average 1.25 million total viewers. In February, Hallmark was cable’s 10th most-watched network, with average viewer numbers up 22 percent over the same month last year. Ad revenue has also grown, up 21 percent in the fourth quarter to $63 million and up 18 percent for the year.

Hallmark is launching a high definition movie channel on April 2.
