XM Weds BlackBerry for Music, Comedy Programming

CrackBerry addicts who also can’t do without their satellite radio service now have another reason to cling lovingly to their gadget of choice.

Today, XM Radio Mobile announced that XM service will be universally available on select BlackBerry smartphones. The service, which can run across major U.S. mobile service providers’ networks, enables consumers to get 20 exclusive XM channels of music and 24-hour comedy programming for $7.99 per month. They can also choose to take advantage of a complimentary 24-hour trial.

The XM channels are easily accessed via a simple user interface with graphical icons for content genres and channels. While listening to one XM Radio Mobile channel, users can see the song title, artist and album, as well as what’s currently playing on other XM Radio Mobile channels. XM Radio Mobile can run in the background while the user accesses other data applications on their BlackBerry smartphone.

XM has been in a protracted merger process with rival Sirius Satellite Radio. Last week, the Justice Department gave the merger its seal of approval; the FCC still has not made a ruling.
