Wal-Mart Goes Deep Into the Green w/Sustainable Products

Wal-Mart is launching the most comprehensive environmental sustainability campaign in its history. But they can’t claim it saves consumers money.

The new campaign, the cost of which was not disclosed, will encompass TV, radio, print and inserts in May issues of general-interest magazines. The TV spots focus on specific examples of sustainability such as co-branded Coca-Cola T-shirts made with RPET, a material manufactured from recycled plastic bottles. Another :30 supports the just-launched Wal-Mart line of organic and fair trade certified coffees.

The tag line ‘Earth Month ‘08. Save money. Live better’ will be splashed on in-store signage and will highlight 500 eco friendly products.

The campaign follows a decision by the National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus that Wal-Mart must change assertions in a current campaign claiming that shopping at Wal-Mart saves customers an average of $2,500 per family per year. The NAD statement, as reported in Brandweek, says that Wal-Mart cannot make that claim. The NAD did accept Wal-Mart’s claim that “its efficiency and size drive down consumer prices across the entire U.S. economy, generating that $2,500 savings regardless of where consumers shop.”
