Regional magazines are faring rather well in a tight economy and have experienced a flurry of first-quarter launches.
Regionals, such as business journals, home/design mags and luxury titles, tend to cater to very narrow readerships. And while the category may not be immune to economic upheaval, new publishers are optimistic about the titles’ futures. “If you have a strong product that people want and need then you can get through the economic cycles,” says Jonathan Weber, publisher of New West magazine, a quarterly shelter and living title covering mountain regions of several western states.
An Alabama-focused lifestyle magazine, Thicket, started bimonthly publication in January with an initial circ. of 30,000, reported Folio mgazine. “We believe the major advertisers in this market realize the need for a vehicle that promotes the state in a sophisticated manner,” said Lee Hurley, co-publisher. “We have miles to go in the revenue area but we are on the road. Our plan is for steady rather than meteoric growth.”
Other recently launched titles include Virginia Wine Lover (quarterly), Greater Lafayette Business Journal (monthly), New Heights out of Tampa, Fla. (bi-monthly), Business New England (bi-monthly) and Durham, based in Durham, N.C. (bi-monthly).
