A wide cross-section of cable networks were affected by Nielsen’s overstatement of coverage area ratings that’s been going on since October, 2007.
The networks include larger well-established channels such as E! Entertainment, National Geographic and Oxygen. The roster of smaller channels includes Biography, Discovery Health, G4, Golf Channel, Investigation Discovery, Military, NFL Network, Nicktoons, Outdoor Channel, Science Channel, Style and VH1 Classic.
Nielsen began notifying clients last week that it has been understating household coverage estimates for about 20 networks since at least October 2007 because of a snafu in measuring satellite TV distributors’ data (26 percent of U.S. households have satellite TV). This error resulted in an overstatement of the ratings for those networks’ coverage areas during the period. Nielsen maintains that national viewership ratings, used by most buyers, were unaffected.
Four of the networks on the list were Comcast cable networks.
A client notice sent by Nielsen stated that “Given the rapid growth and the increase in the number of packages and channels available, this process no longer provides the necessary level of reliability to accurately define household channel receivability, and the package templates are not consistent enough to make broad receivability decisions.”
