NY Radio Station Rejects AJC Ad

The New York Times’s classical radio station, WQXR, has refused to run a :60 spot from the American Jewish Committee on the grounds that parts of the spot were “outside our bounds of acceptability.”

The AJC has cancelled its contract with WQXR, saying, “It’s a shame, but we can’t allow ourselves to be edited on a whim,” according to The New York Post’s Page Six. The radio station’s general manager says the opening line of the spot, which warns, “Imagine you had 15 seconds to find shelter from an incoming missile,” does not make it clear that the potential target of the missile is “not in our listening area.” He also says parts of the rest of the ad are misleading, and the general tone of the ad does not meet the station’s guidelines for decorum.

CBS Radio aired the spot nationally on Charles Osgood’s The Osgood File.

WQXR has run eight other AJC spots in recent weeks.
