It was just a matter of time: taking a pointer from sister networks HGTV and the Food Network, Scripps’ Great American Country station is launching a reality show to find “the next Great American Country Star.”
The Next Food Network Star and HGTV Design Star have become staples of their two networks, with winners receiving a starring role in their own show on those channels, writes MediaPost.
A show with a similar flavor, Nashville Star, is moving from USA to NBC on June 9.
The Great American Country network is seeking to make its mark in a market dominated by the Country Music Channel, a network which has moved aggressively into reality based shows.
Design Star will return on HGTV June 8, with another show, Rate My Space, coming June 19. At its upfront presentation yesterday, the network addressed the fact of the troubled real estate market, saying that while the housing market may have cooled, real estate is still hot on HGTV. HGTV will also air a show about transforming rooms into eco-friendly environment, Red Hot and Green.
The Next Food Network Star launches June 1 on Food Network. Alton Brown is launching a six-week spinoff Feasting on Waves, about searching for indigenous foods in the Caribbean. The Chef Jeff Project is coming in the fall, about a man who was once in prison for drug dealing and who hopes to help others reverse their course, as he did.
The Scripps networks - which include DIY and Fine Living, in addition to GAC, HGTV and the Food Network - are splitting off from parent E. W. Scripps’ newspaper and television business this summer, to form a separate Scripss company. The five networks together saw an increase in ad dollars of 11 percent, to $928 million, in 2007.
Scripps says the networks all retain audiences well during commercial breaks, and all perform strongly with the new C3 ratings.
All sectors of the media business will suffer from the weakened economy in 2008 and 2009, with a slump in local advertising particularly hurting newspapers and local TV, according to a new projection from Goldman Sachs.
