With the phenomenal success of the High School Musical franchise among the teeny bopper crowd - and even adults have been known to hum along to ‘The Start of Something New’ - Disney has no plans to halt the freight train.
High School Musical 3 is being released in theaters this fall, with filming just beginning in Utah; High School Musical 4 is currently being written, and is expected to air as an original movie on the network, though it may still become a theatrical, says Rich Ross, pres of Disney Channels Worldwide (via MediaPost).
The cast is not expected to return en masse for the fourth movie.
Ross is saying that Disney will be careful to avoid committing to subsequent versions of the movie unless there really is another story to tell - but, MediaPost points out, Disney has never been one to pull back on a successful franchise. (Some might argue that, had Disney stuck with Ross’s theory, a second film would never have been made.)
High School Musical has pulled in billions in revenue not only from the films but from brand extensions in consumer products, tours, albums, and even a reality series on ABC this summer.
