Gawker Dumps Wonkette, Two Others

In a surprising move, Gawker Media is selling three sites, including the popular Wonkette. Why? “To be blunt: they each had their editorial successes; but someone else will have better luck selling the advertising than we did,” says Gawker’s founder and publisher Nick Denton.

The other sites being sold are Gridskipper and Idolator.

Wonkette is being spun off to Ken Layne, Wonkette’s managing editor, who will take over the site as it becomes part of the Blogads network. Gridskipper has been purchased by Lockhart Steele’s Curbed network. Idolator is now owned by Buzznet.

Gawker has the complete email sent by Denton announcing the news.
