In the last year, live ads on talk shows have been staging a slow comeback. Now, ABC is set to announce that its Jimmy Kimmel Live broadcast will integrate live commercials in each broadcast, depending on advertiser interest.
Last June, NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jay Leno aired a live commercial for Garmin in the form of a skit. Garmin is planning to air another in the second half of this year. Other networks have considered the form - as well as other ways to integrate advertising into programming - as a way to combat the increasing numbers of viewers who use DVRs to fast-forward through commercials.
The live ads on Kimmel are expected to begin in mid-May.
The form of advertising popular in the early days of television, when programs were sponsored and sponsor messages were incorporated into the program, lost popularity in the ’70s, writes Adweek.
Live ads continue to be a staple on talk radio. Alpo, which was a regular buyer of live ads on The Tonight Show in the days of Johnny Carson, still has a presence on radio, while Snapple credits Howard Stern’s live ads for the successful launch of its iced tea brand.
Ad buyers are said to be interested in the idea. ” The brand has to fit, first and foremost, and I’m sure it’s not for everyone,” says David Barrington, evp, managing director of video investments at Havas’ MPG. “But at the end of the day to have someone who is a great talent like that make the ad a part of the content will help get our messaging across and also help break through the clutter.
