The Atlantic is on a quest to become more contemporary, embarking on an overall retooling process that is “not an overhaul as much as a refinement,” says Justin Smith, Atlantic Media’s president of consumer media.
The magazine has hired an integrated marketing agency to help with the process, which will include a redesign of the print magazine and relaunch of its website, writes Folio.
The work should be completed by the fall, and will be launched with a full-scale marketing campaign, the first in its 150-year history.
The Atlantic magazine, known for its epic print essays, last month launched a digital publication, in beta, called The Current, for folks with no time to digest 5,000-10,000 word pieces.
The new digital domain features 250-300 word items to appeal to the long-form impaired. In January, the Atlantic made its once-paid content archives free to non-subscribers. Smith reported that the move led to a traffic increase of about 15 percent to 2.3 million monthly unique visitors.
