Couric’s Newscast Bottoms out Again

Following a week of relentless rumors that Katie Couric will be leaving her position as anchor of the CBS Evening News after the presidential inauguration, ratings for the news show has hit another all-time low.

CBS News exec Paul Friedman said (via TV Newser) that the situation is “very frustrating. It’s a first-rate broadcast and the staff is doing a first-rate job.”

Friedman insists Couric’s newscast is at least as good as the others. “Neither the broadcast nor she is getting the credit they deserve.”

Could the press coverage that announced Couric’s imminent departure have had anything to do with the low ratings? “That would be giving all of you too much credit,” Friedman says.

The newscast averaged 5.4 million viewers last week, the lowest number recorded since Nielsen switched to people meters in 1987, and perhaps the lowest for an evening newscast since the early years, writes Reuters. CBS’s previous low of 5.5 million viewers came in September.
