Meredith Broadcast Profit Slips 10%; Publishing Fares Better

It’s becoming a mantra: slips in retail, automotive and telecommunications advertising is wreaking havoc with financial results of many media companies.

Meredith Corp.’s fiscal Q3 broadcast profit was down 10 percent to 19 million, while revenues fell 1 percent to $78 million. The publishing biz fared better than broadcasting: Operating profit was at $64.7 million, up a hair from $64.4 million from the prior period. Revenues were at $323.5 million, versus $323.3 million. The increases came from circulation gains and profit margin increases, writes MediaPost.

Ad revenues on the publishing side slipped, however, by 4 percent to $155 million, on weakness in home, pharmaceuticals and direct-response advertising categories.

Online revenue soared by nearly 50 percent during the quarter. Monthly average unique visitors across the company’s sites quadrupled to 8 million, according to the company.
Net earnings for the company overall were up 1.7 percent to $46 million during the period. Revenues were virtually flat at $401.0 million from $401.8 in the third quarter last year.
