Google Brings Display Ads to Mobile Phones

Google is bringing display ads to cell phones. The images look like standard display ads, but have been made smaller to fit mobile phone screens.

The mobile image ads are targeted based on keywords that appear on the websites people visit on their cell phones, according to CNet. Ads are priced on a CPC basis, and must link to websites optimized to work on mobile phones.

Only one ad per page will be included, and images will be limited to brands rather than actual products or other pictures.

Reuters adds that the mobile image ads are available in Australia, China, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Russia, Spain, the U.K., and the United States, Google said.

Companies that already display banner ads include Yahoo, AdMob and Third Screen (now owned by AOL). Microsoft displays banner ads on some of its mobile pages, such as MSNBC.

Mobile internet usage is still low, so while many other companies already support mobile banners, Google probably hasn’t missed an opportunity, according to Greg Sterling (via PC World), an analyst who follows mobile search and advertising as part of a joint venture between Sterling Market Research and Opus Research. Sterling points out that advertisers are still mostly experimenting with mobile advertising, so they are likely not yet wedded to any particular ad network.
