Abu Dhabi Launches English-Language Daily

Abu Dhabi is launching a new English-language newspaper that the editor, Martin Newland, promises will be comparable to the Wall Street Journal.

The National comes from one of the Middle East’s wealthiest ruling families, which says the paper will be independent from its royal owners, writes The New York Times.

The paper is being watched closely in the Middle East and abroad. Most media is tightly controlled by the government in the Middle East, and the newspaper, if it does as it promises, will be an anomaly.

The staff of the national was culled from newspapers around the world, including the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and The Telegraph. It has 30 percent advertising and in fact has had to turn away advertisers looking for space in the first few issues, in order to maintain 70 percent editorial.

The National has been designed in the style of a British broadsheet and aims to give the capital of the United Arab Emirates a public voice, according to CNN.

80,000 copies are being printed, with 30,000 trial subscribers and a subscription rate of $110 per year.

On Monday, the Financial Times of London announced a new edition for the Middle East, with editorial offices based in Abu Dhabi.
