‘Atlanta Journal-Constitution’ Saves $$, Hacks Distribution

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is slicing its distribution area from 74 to 49 counties in a move that will reduce its circulation by 2.2 percent daily and 1.9 percent on Sunday.

It is the second time in just over a year that the paper has narrowed its print distribution area to trim costs, according to the newspaper.

The move will not affect the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s readership stats, which are based on a core, 28-county market.

In recent years, newspapers have been fighting shrinking circulation, as readers - and advertisers - move to the web. However, some newspapers have also been moved to purposely cut their subscription bases in order to deal with rising costs like that of newsprint.

Total audience for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution is rising, according to the paper. Print and online readership recently reached 2.2 million as measured over a 7-day period. Print circulation, however, has been in a steady decline, falling 8.5 percent for the six-month period ended March 31.

With the new distribution cuts, circulation will drop to 320,200 daily and 487,700 on Sunday.
