More chicken is becoming available at America’s favorite burger chain. McDonald’s has expanded its chicken menu, and is planning a big sampling effort in the hopes of getting customers to try the new “Southern style” chicken biscuit and sandwich.
On May 15, the burger chain will give customers free chicken biscuits for breakfast, or chicken sandwiches for lunch or dinner, when they purchase a medium or large drink, according to BusinessWeek.
“Full product sampling is a key component of the Southern Style Chicken launch,” says Marta Fearon, director of U.S. marketing at McDonald’s (via MediaPost). “We believe that when consumers try it for breakfast, lunch or dinner, they will naturally come back for more. And we hope they will tell their friends.”
McDonald’s is claiming the dubious distinction of becoming the largest national restaurant chain to serve chicken at breakfast.
Support for the sampling campaign includes TV, radio, print, PR, email blasts and banner ads.
McDonald’s is also inviting consumers nationwide to take part in the great chicken vs. egg debate by logging on to WhatCameFirst.com (in Spanish at Quienfueprimero.com). The site is built around a game application where visitors can customize egg or chicken characters and choreograph moves for a dance-off, pitting them against friends to decide the ultimate champion: the chicken or the egg. Website visitors can forward animations to friends and family, and view “man-on-the-street” video interviews from people across the country weighing in on the question of “what came first?”
