A news conference confirming the change is expected to take place some time today, according to the AP.
NBCU is reportedly trying to find a job that will make Jay Leno happy, once he leaves Tonight; reportedly, he is not eager to leave his post. The network hopes to keep him around so that he won’t slip off to ABC or Fox and compete directly against O’Brien.
NBC could decide to keep Leno on Tonight, but O’Brien’s contract calls for a penalty fee which is reportedly close to $40 million. The switch is likely to take place in June, 2009, The New York Times writes.
