Microsoft Bows Mobile Display Ads

Microsoft is testing text-based ads on Live Search Mobile in the U.S. The beta program will expand beyond the U.S. later this year.

Microsoft is also launching display ads for mobile users of Windows Live Messenger and Live Hotmail.

While it is the last among its rivals to launch mobile ad capabilities, the market penetration of Microsoft’s devices may nonetheless make it a serious force in the burgeoning market, writes MarketingVox.

Google invited AdWords advertisers to display banners instead of just text on mobile phones in April.

Only about 150 million of the 1 billion phones expected to be sold this year will have rich-advertising capabilities, according to Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft’s entertainment and devices division. But he points out (via PC World) that that number is expected to triple - in a few years, 400 million to 500 million phones will be able to display rich advertising.

However, Microsoft’s prediction might be optimistic, given the current economic outlook: the NDP Group said in a report released yesterday that mobile phone sales in the U.S. declined 22 percent in the first quarter compared to the same quarter last year, mostly because of the downturn in the economy.

A recent study of a mobile advertising campaign by Greystripe and New Line Cinema showed that awareness of and interest in the film The Golden Compass increased significantly among those who were exposed to full-screen mobile ads.
