Senators Weight In on Satcaster Merger

Two more senators have weighed in on the potential satcaster marriage of XM and Sirius. If the FCC approves the merger, Sens. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Claire McCaskill (D-MO) want certain conditions put into place.

The senators want a combined XM-Sirius to be required to get rid of as much as half of its spectrum, because allowing “a single entity to hold the entire amount would essentially bar any possible new entrant into that market,” according to Radio Ink.

They would also like the FCC to reaffirm that satellite radio is a national service only, not authorized to offer localized content from market to market.

The Justice Dept. approved the merger in March. FCC approval has been pending for over a year.
