Clear Channel Sues Tribune Co., Alleges Trade-Secret Poaching

Clear Channel is crying foul over Tribune Co.’s hiring of Andy Friedman, previously Clear Channel’s vp of news, talk and sports at its music and radio division.

Clear Channel says Friedman has threatened to disclose detailed knowledge of ongoing projects and digital strategies, and has sued Tribune Co. for misappropriation of trade secrets, according to MediaPost. The suit asks for an injunction to keep Friedman from working for Tribune until the end of the year, as well as monetary damages and the return of any sensitive business documents.

Friedman is the latest in a series of hires from Clear Channel on Tribune Co.’s part. Randy Michaels, Tribune’s chief operating officer, was Clear Channel’s CEO from 1999-2002. After he was hired by Tribune’s Zell in December 2007, Michaels brought on four associates from his tenure at Clear Channel and installed them as Tribune Co.’s CFO, senior vps of programming, and vp of technology.

Clear Channel has been particularly litigious in the past few months, having recently sued the banks financing the company’s buyout deal. The banks and Clear Channel won’t go to court, however, as the entities involved agreed to a lower buyout price - from the originally agreed-upon price of $39.20 per share down to $36 per share. If shareholders agree to the reduced price, the sale should move forward.
