NBC Sports has entered into a joint venture with the World Championship Sports Network, a newbie cable net and website. WCSN will be rebranded Universal Sports in time for lead-up programming to the Olympics.
The main job of Universal Sports, in the months leading up to the Olympics in mid-August, will be to feature profiles of the athletes and streaming footage of their trials, according to Variety.
While NBCU’s NBCOlympics.com website will still be NBC’s primary online destination for the company’s Olympics footage, Dick Ebersol, chairman of NBCU Sports & Olympics, says the new network and website will be a year-round home to Olympic sports and athletes.
WCSN is controlled by private equity firm InterMedia Partners.
