McDonald’s Goes Retro, Revives ‘Two All Beef Patties, Special Sauce’ Song

McDonald’s is celebrating the 40th birthday of its Big Mac sandwich with a contest on MySpace.com which invites consumers to remix McDonald’s most famous jingle.

Most consumers alive in the ’70s are able to sing along with the chant that goes, “Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame-seed bun.”

A panel of judges will select the semifinalists, with the winning remix chosen through an online vote. The winning remix will become part of a Big Mac TV ad that will air at the end of July. A seven-week campaign supports the contest, including digital, TV and print.

Inside restaurants, merchandising and POP materials will also support the promotion. Keith Reinhard, chairman emeritus of DDB Worldwide, and his creative group at Needham Harper & Steers, developed the jingle in 1974.

The MySpace McDonald’s Chant web page can be found here.McDonald’s sells over 500 million Big Macs every year in the U.S. alone, according to the company. McDonald’s sales were up 7.4 percent in the first quarter this year. Year-to-date, sales were up 7.0 percent, according to MediaPost.
