Behavioral-Targeting Ad Spend Poised for Growth, with Help from Online Video

Spending on behavioral targeting will increase to $4.4 billion by 2012, up from just $775 million this year, with online video a major driver of that growth, according to eMarketer (via MarketingCharts).

New VP of Advertising for New York Times

Paul Smurl has been named vice-president, advertising, for the New York Times, effective immediately, the Times announced.

Smurl will be responsible for sales development, agency relations and presentations in addition to strategy and planning, and will continue to report to Denise Warren, senior vice-president, advertising, for the New York Times Media Group.

Carl Icahn Launches ‘The Icahn Report’

Carl Icahn, who currently seeks to oust Yahoo’s board of directors, debuted his own blog, The Icahn Report, last week. The controversial investor first stated his intention to launch a blog in February, reports Reuters.

Editorial Director Mike LaFavore Leaves Meredith

Mike LaFavore of Meredith Publishing Group told president Jack Griffin he plans to leave his role as Editorial Director. He has held the position since 2005. 

In an interview with Mediaweek, LaFavore confessed, “I’m not having as much fun as I’d liked.” He expressed his desire to return to actual editorial work, adding, “Editorial director of a company is a tough job.”

He reportedly also hopes to work for Barack Obama’s Presidential election campaign.

The soon-to-be ex-Editorial Director told Griffin he would wait to leave until June 30, the end of the fiscal quarter.

LaFavore served as founding editor of Men’s Health. He was also editor for TV Guide.

AP Drops Conflict with Drudge Retort; No Formal Agreement Made with Media Bloggers Association

The Associated Press (AP) reports it has resolved its conflict with copyright-infringing bloggers, reports MarketingVOX.

The AP recently attacked bloggers in a media fight about “fair use” of content. Specifically, it took issue with bloggers excerpting titles or sentences from its articles, which other publications must pay to publish in entirety.
