As expected, the Chicago Tribune is hacking away at its newsroom staff, planning to eliminate 80 positions by the end of August. Positions in other departments will be axed, as well, writes the Chicago Tribune.
The paper will also reduce the number of pages it publishes by 13 percent to 14 percent each week, as part of an initiative by parent Tribune Co. to bring its newspapers to a 50/50 split between editorial and advertising.
The Los Angeles Times, Tribune Co.’s largest paper, plans to cut about 150 jobs, or about 17 percent of its newsroom, while slimming the number of pages it publishes by 15 percent each week until Labor Day.
Tribune Co. papers are in the process of redesigning, with the Orlando Sentinel having already unveiled its new look. Other papers will be redesigned by the end of September.
Tribune Co. is facing the same challenges that are plaguing the newspaper industry as a whole, but it also has its own unique challenge: a load of debt the company took on when it went private with Sam Zell last year. The sale of Newsday gives the company some much-needed breathing space this year; the sale of the Cubs is expected to help next year, Zell says.
