AMC Makes Emmy History with Best-Series Nod

'Mad Men' best drama?

AMC’s Mad Men snared 16 Emmy nominations, including best drama - the first time a basic cable series was nominated in the best-series category.

The show received the most nominations of all dramatic TV series. FX’s Damages also received a nom for best drama, along with Showtime’s Dexter.

Overall, cable shows dominated the Emmys, adding fuel to the argument that much of the best work on television is now being done on cable, writes The New York Times. And it wasn’t just HBO scooping up all the action - though that network’s John Adams mini-series was the most-nominated program, with 23 nods. In fact, half the nominees for best drama were from cable.

The network shows in the running are ABC’s Lost and Boston Legal - which remains inexplicably popular with Emmy voters, according to the San Jose Mercury News - and Fox’s House. (There are usually five nominees in each category but a number this year had six.)

For best comedy, NBC’s 30 Rock and The Office joined HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm and Entourage, and CBS’s Two And A Half Men - network’s most-watched sitcom.

Best commercial nods went to: Leo Burnett for a Hallmark Cards spot called Brother of the Bride; BBDO New York for a FedEx spot called Carrier Pigeons; Fallon, for a Travelers spot called Delivery; Wieden + Kennedy for Coke’s It’s Mine; and DDB Chicago for Bud Light’s Swear Jar.
