Not enough top-level marketing talent exists to help marketing departments reach their goals, according to a survey of nearly 400 members of the Marketing Executives Networking Group. And top marketers tend to stay in their jobs just 2.5 years.
More than 70 percent of MENG members say there is a shortage of qualified executive-level talent, writes MediaPost. “I know companies that have not had a chief marketing officer for two years because they can’t find someone,” says MENG president Richard Guha.
Marketing professionals tend to be granted the least amount of time to learn a new business. Often, companies bring on a top-level executive to turn around a failing business, doesn’t give him enough time to learn the ropes, and then push him out the door, says Guha. “We know the average time a chief marketing officer spends in any position is 22 months, and the study suggests many marketing executives have just under eight jobs in about 18 years. That’s quite horrifying,” he says.
