Pew Study: Newspapers Focus Locally, Write Less National, Global News

Most newspapers publish less national and foreign news than they did three years ago, and carry smaller news staffs, according to a study by the Pew Research Center and Tyler Marshall, former foreign correspondent for the Los Angeles Times.

The study, based on a survey of top editors at 259 newspapers of all sizes, shows that 64 percent of American newspapers publish less foreign news than three years ago, and 57 percent cover less national news, writes The New York Times.

Just 10 percent of editors said that foreign news was “very essential” to their papers, something which Tom Rosenstiel, director of Pew’s Project for Excellence in Journalism, sees as a troubling trend. “It’s really concerning when we have two wars overseas, our economy is more global, we’re competing with economies that are growing faster than ours, and our dependence on foreign oil is one of the biggest stories,” he is quoted as saying.

Sixty percent of editors reported having less space for news overall.

Half of all papers have increased state and local news, particularly hyper-local community news.
