TV Slips Past Newspapers for Tops in Ad Revenue; Internet Wins in 3 Years

Broadcast TV will surpass newspapers in terms of ad revenue for the first time in history this year, predicts Veronis Suhler Stevenson. Newspapers took in $51.5 billion in ad revenue last year, compared with $48 billion for broadcast TV. This year, TV will jump to $51 billion, while newspapers are expected to slip to less than $47 billion.

Within three years, the internet will leap ahead of them both, taking over as the leading generator of advertising revenue, the Hollywood Reporter writes.

Internet advertising will show a 19 percent compound annual growth rate from 2007 through 2012; broadcast TV will grow just over 2.5 percent, and newspapers will decline by 2.8 percent. The internet is expected to bring in $60 billion in advertising in 2011, followed by $51 billion-plus for broadcast TV and about $44 billion for newspapers.

The “pure-play” internet category - which includes companies like Yahoo and Google - is expected to bring in $21.9 billion in advertising revenue this year, 20.5 percent more than last year, while “traditional” internet, which includes traditional media companies’ online properties like NYTimes.com and ABC.com, will bring in $14.1 billion, or 28.3 percent more than a year ago.

This year may also mark the first time that consumers spend more on media than advertisers do, predicts VSS (via USA Today).
