Mobile Video, TV Issues ‘Being Resolved,’ Ad Market to Reach $555M this Year

Consumer adoption of mobile video advertising has slumped along at a pace guaranteed to drive marketers crazy. While the lure of combining TV with the targeting capabilities of mobile is hard to deny, it is difficult to justify a steady spend in the arena when the reach is still low.

But a new report, Mobile Video and Television: Ads Wait for a Clearer Picture, from eMarketer, suggests that many of the issues that have held up the mobile video advertising market are being resolved.

“iPhone’s success raised the bar of consumer expectations regarding mobile multimedia,” says John du Pre Gauntt, author of the report. “Handset manufacturers worldwide are in the midst of revamping their product lines against this new benchmark.”

While Gauntt says it is still difficult to forecast for mobile video and TV because the market is still fragmented and undeveloped, iSuppli estimates that mobile video advertising worldwide will reach $427 million this year and nearly $3.8 billion in 2011.

Magna Insights estimates that number to be more like $555 million this year, in the U.S. alone, and $805 million by 2009.

But Gauntt warns that, until consumers are shown a clear-cut, simple and inexpensive model for accessing mobile video and TV content, it will be difficult to “segment audiences at either an industry or geographic level.”
