Gannett Said to Be Slicing 3% of Workforce

Gannett is said to be axing 1,000 jobs, or 3% of its workforce. 600 of those positions cut will come through lay-offs, writes the Gannett Blog, an independent journal about the Gannett Company.

The news is the latest in a long list of newspaper companies cutting expenses via lay-offs and other means in order to remain viable amidst seemingly insurmountable challenges, including the tough economy, shrinking ad dollars, and the shift of readers who are increasingly getting news and entertainment from the web.

Last month Gannett reported surprisingly weak second-quarter earnings.

Amidst the struggles newspapers are facing, TV will quietly slip past them in terms of ad revenue for the first time in history this year, predicts Veronis Suhler Stevenson.
