Sports Illustrated has created an online auction, powered by eBay, to sell some of its inventory across print, digital and events media in order to give the sales force more time to sell more effectively.
Parent company Time Inc. hopes online auctions will allow it to reach advertisers that don’t tend to be in touch with the title’s sales force. They also wanted to be able to gather advertisers quickly for time-sensitive products, such as commemorative issues, in a way that wouldn’t unduly tap the sales force’s time with last-minute requests. And, the company wanted a way to sell small amounts of unsold inventory, leaving the sales team more time to focus on bigger packages, the company says.
