Chris Russo, former partner of Mike Francesa on WFAN and otherwise known as Mad Dog, is launching a 24-hour sports-talk channel on Sirius XM radio.
Russo left the Mike and the Mad Dog show last week, a month short of their 19th anniversary as sports-talk radio’s most well-known team.
The host will compete directly with Francesa during afternoon drive time, with a show airing from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., beginning Sept. 15. He will also lead a number of other hosts who will make up the rest of the channel’s schedule, beginning in October, writes The New York Times.
Mad Dog Radio will appear on both XM and Sirius, according to Newsday. Russo is said to have signed a five-year contract worth about $3 million per year.
Sirius XM is the newly combined company formed by the merger of Sirius and XM Satellite Radio. The subscription satellite service now claims 18.5 million subscribers.
Mel Karmazin, CEO of Sirius XM, is confident Russo will generate ad dollars and subscribers. “The way I value talent is based on revenues and based on the audience. Here’s, it’s subscribers; [at WFAN], it was ratings. Chris always managed to deliver ratings and revenues.”
