Just as newspapers are slashing costs in the face of slipping revenue, the Newspaper Association of America is doing some cutting of its own, shrinking the number of conferences it hosts.
The NAA is cutting Nexpo and the NAA Marketing Conference, and is adding a new annual event called the NAA mediaXchange, writes MediaPost. The new event will focus on digital, interactive content and advertising, and will include a trade show for technology vendors to hawk their wares in a more targeted setting than the NAA Marketing Conference.
The new show will take place March 9-11, 2009, in Las Vegas.
Nexpo was the newspaper industry’s largest conference, but attendance had been slipping in recent years. Kevin McCourt, NAA’s vp/advertising and exhibition sales, says Nexpo attendees were asking for the big trade show to be held every other year rather than every year (via Editor & Publisher). But members want an annual event for the exchange of ideas, and some vendors have products whose lifecycle would not thrive in a bi-yearly format, he says. Getting rid of the two shows, and creating a new yearly event, will be easier on attendees’ and vendors’ budgets.
