Before the month is out, the U.S. just may overtake the U.K. as the top market for mobile web usage. Mobile internet access provider Bango says the U.S., which pulled about 18.9 percent of mobile web usage in July - just behind the U.K., which accounted for almost 19.4 percent of the worldwide total - is on trend to take the top spot.
The U.S. mobile web usage has increased 4 percent, while U.K. growth has been just 1 percent in recent weeks, according to Bango (via Adweek). The U.S. should hold a 23 percent share of the total mobile internet market by the end of August, with the U.K. holding slightly more than 20 percent.
In July, the other top markets included India, with 10.8 percent, South Africa (8.8 percent) and Indonesia (4.1 percent).
The U.S., which has lagged behind European counties in terms of mobile web adoption, is seeing a surge thanks to the build-out of 3G networks.
The growth should attract more analysts to the space. eMarketer is predicting that mobile advertising will grow from $1.6 billion in 2008 to $6.4 billion in 2012.
