Not quite of Olympics proportions - but not too shabby, either - the opening day of the Democratic National Convention pulled an audience of nearly 22.3 million viewers Monday night across networks. The cable nets’ audience was significantly higher than the last Democratic convention held in 2004, as was NBC’s, while ABC and CBS numbers both slipped.
CNN was tops, with an average prime time audience of 3.7 million viewers. That’s up 85 percent from its July 26, 2004, numbers, writes Media Life. Fox News averaged 3.02 million total viewers, up 84 percent, while MSNBC drew an average of 2.15 million viewers, up 88 percent.
ABC, CBS and NBC pulled 12.2 million total viewers in the single hour that all three devoted to convention coverage, down by 1.34 million viewers from 2004. NBC was up 7 percent, while ABC dropped 14 percent and CBS fell 23 percent.
