Katie Couric, network TV’s number-three news anchor, apparently still has the unflagging support of CBS. Following the conventions, CBS pres and CEO Les Moonves said he is proud of Couric’s performance at the conventions and that he is willing to be patient as he waits for ratings to rise.
Of course, he acknowledged, it would be nice if ratings were better: CBS News, consistently third place behind NBC and ABC, remained in third during coverage of the political conventions - though some nights Couric’s broadcast did come close to tying with ABC, writes Broadcasting & Cable.
“I think the conventions accentuated what a phenomenal talent she is. She is great on her feet. She is a great interviewer. She’s great at passing the ball around. I think she did an extraordinary job…. I think we showed how good we were,” Moonves said. “Ratings notwithstanding, we’re doing a terrific job.”
Last spring, rumor had it that Couric’s days as anchor of the CBS Evening News were numbered, and that she would be replaced after the elections.
