NBCU Content Pulls Record Traffic

NBCU saw record traffic at three websites last week, thanks to three unrelated events: Tina Fey’s send-up of Sarah Palin on SNL was NBC.com’s most-watched viral video ever; NBCU began selling TV shows on iTunes again, pulling more than 1 million downloads for NBCU TV properties since Sept. 9; and the shaky state of Wall Street this week kept visitors streaming into CNBC.com, giving the site its largest audience ever, according to Omniture (via Adweek).

Tina Fey’s Palin impersonation pulled 5.7 million views on NBC.com; second-place winner Box has had just over 1 million views. The success of the video on NBC.com can be attributed in part - aside from Fey’s brilliance - to NBC’s aggressive efforts to keep the video from being pirated on YouTube, where past hits were viewed in greater numbers than on the NBC site.

CNBC.com pulled more than 1 million unique visitors for the first time on Monday, for a total of 14.6 million page views - a 26 percent increase over the site’s previous record.

Meanwhile, over on iTunes, about 30 percent of top-selling shows are those either airing or produced by NBCU. Top sellers of NBCU fare on iTunes include The Office, Heroes and SNL.
