Newspapers Continue to Slip in Aug., but NYT Co. Sees Silver Lining

The New York Times Co. continued to see ad revenue slip in August, down some 14 percent to $110.6 million, while Gannett posted a decline of 16.8 percent.

At Gannett’s USA Today, ad revenue decreased 13.5 percent, with gains in telecommunications, advocacy and financial advertising unable to offset losses in automotive, tech, retail and home and building categories, writes Editor & Publisher.

Declines at those newspaper groups, and at Media General, McClatchy, Lee and Scripps, prompted Deutsche Bank analyst David Clark to predict an even more dismal second half of 2008, according to MediaPost.

But The New York Times numbers, though dour, may suggest an improvement for the company, which reported a steeper 18 percent year-over-year decline in June and July. Perhaps more encouraging is the fact that the company posted a 7.9 percent rise in internet advertising revenue despite weakness in online recruitment and real estate advertising (down 45 percent and 30 percent respectively). Online advertising for the company was flat in July, prompting concerns because online is newspapers’ hope for the future, Forbes writes.

Outsell Inc.’s Ken Doctor warned against premature optimism, saying he expects the latest financial sector troubles to depress ad revenue into September and beyond.
