- NBC has announced the guest performers for the season two finale of “The Voice." New blood: Justin Bieber, who will offer the television premiere performance of his new single “Boyfriend” from his upcoming album “Believe” (due for release June 19). More new blood: Flo Rida, who will perform a medley of his hit single “Wild Ones,” and one additional song. Old blood: Daryl Hall and John Oates, the number-one selling duo in history, will perform their first ever #1 single, “Rich Girl.” The duo has sold over 80 million albums worldwide and have had 29 Top 40 hits. Finally, multi-Platinum country music trio Lady Antebellum will perform “Wanted You More” from their latest hit album, “Own the Night.” The seven-time Grammy Award winning trio was recently nominated for four 2012 Billboard Music Awards and continues to sell out their 2012 Own the Night World Tour across the globe.
- A surprisingly dead political season for TV ad spending, reports Deadline Hollywood. The networks anticipated a record-setting 2012 campaign, but Wells Fargo Securities analyst Marci Rivicker reports that is not so. Campaigns have spent $275.5M on TV ads through April 15; with nearly 66% going to broadcast stations while the rest went to national TV and cable. All told, the ad spend was 20% below the average in presidential year campaigns from 2000 through 2008. Ryvicker believes the large number of GOP debates dampened the need for advertising—debates are free advertising for the nominees. Also true, the last election cycle had no incumbent, so both parties jockeyed for the presidential nod, whereas the Democrats have no need to spend until the GOP candidate is sorted out (beginning now).
- The nominees are in for the always well-rated “MTV Movie Awards,” with “The Hunger Games” and “Bridesmaids” neck-in-neck with eight nominations each (including the categories of Movie of the Year, Best Cast and Breakthrough Performance). Fans will have the “Power of the Popcorn” in their hands as winner voting opens today, May 1 at 8 A.M. ET/5 A.M. PT, at MovieAwards.MTV.com, and will stay open through Saturday, June 2nd. Nominated films include both blockbusters and critically acclaimed films such as “Drive,” “Like Crazy,” “The Descendants,” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” and “My Week with Marilyn.” This year’s telecast will also be a theatrical throwdown between two funny ladies and an action star as Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy and Jennifer Lawrence all received four nominations each, the most for all female actors nominated. As in previous years, the category of Movie of the Year will remain an ongoing battle throughout the live show when the 21st annual “2012 MTV Movie Awards” airs live on Sunday, June 3rd at 9 P.M. ET/PT on MTV from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California.
- For the second time in three weeks, "Good Morning America" (ABC) has beaten rival "Today" (NBC), “and this time Matt Lauer wasn't on vacation,” reports MediaLife. GMA averaged 5.297 million total viewers for the week ending April 23, versus 5.131 million for "Today," according to Nielsen numbers. While these early numbers could change when final data is released on Thursday, it appears "GMA" will score just its second morning news victory in 16 years, and by a far wider margin than the first (just two weeks ago, and with Lauer on vacation). This victory puts past the idea that Lauer was the only factor in that earlier win.
- “The Office” actor John Krasinski (who plays the snarky Jim) will host “Head Games,” a three-part series for Discovery, airing Sundays at 10 P.M. ET/PT beginning June 3. The show delves into the inner workings of the deeply complex human brain. Through the design and execution of social experiments Discovery promises you will see how everyday people on the streets perceive, conform, and make moral choices when in real-life situations “and what the brain is actually doing to dictate behavior or react to uncomfortable, and, at times, confrontational, circumstances.” A sort of high-brow “Candid Camera,” the show will present staged situations to gauge reactions. For example: Watch what occurs when an actress at the gym asks a stranger to watch her computer, and then a thief attempts to steal it.
