Atheist Bus Ads Spawn Multiple ‘God Does So Exist’ Campaigns

Published on February 06, 2009

An atheist ad campaign running on London buses, itself a response to earlier bus ads that led people to a website where they were told they were going to hell, has prompted several groups to proclaim the existence of God - again, via bus.

The campaign that began the battle of the bus ads was for a Christian website, JesusSaid.org. After visiting that site and learning that she was going to burn for all eternity, comedy writer Ariane Sherine launched a counter-campaign, raising money for the Atheist Bus Campaign; $200,000 later, the campaign launched in early January with ads on 800 buses across Britain.

Now, the Trinitarian Bible Society is running its own bus campaign, spending more than $50,000 to run ads on 50 buses, telling Brits that “the fool hath said in his heart there is no God,” writes Brand Republic.

But it doesn’t end there. The Christian party, taking its cue from the wording of the Atheist Bus Campaign - which read: There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy life - is running an ad that says, There definitely is a God. So join the Christian Party and enjoy your life.

The Russian Orthodox Church also chimed in, saying, There is a God, BELIEVE. Don’t worry and enjoy your life.

The atheist bus ad drew about 100 complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority, but the watchdog took no action.
