MSNBC Brings Inauguration to Movie Screens

Published on January 13, 2009 | Email this article

MSNBC is partnering with Screenvision to bring Obama’s inauguration to movie screens in 27 theaters around the country.

MSNBC.com is offering free tickets to see the inauguration, parade, and other coverage beginning at 11am, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Though the coverage won’t be in high-def - MSNBC doesn’t get high definition until the second quarter - MSNBC pres Phil Griffin says, “It’ll look great.”

MSNBC worked with an alternative programming division of Screenvision that has exhibited Major League baseball games, operas and other live events in movie theaters.

Why air the inauguration at movie theaters when it would seem most Americans would be just as happy viewing the event on their television surrounded by the comforts of home? “We want to reach people we’ve never reached before,” Griffin said. “Ubiquity is the name of the game in 2009.” He added that MSNBC will continue to hold similar events “to get out name out there.”
