The top 30 newspaper websites began to see declines in November in time spent online, as ranked by unique visitors, according to Nielsen Online.

Some papers saw gains. The Minneapolis Star Tribune saw a drop in average time spent per person in Nov., from 41 minutes last November to about 20 minutes in Nov. 2008, but monthly uniques leapt 265%, writes Mediaweek. At the Detroit News, monthly uniques in Nov. were up 232%, but average time spent slipped from 25 minutes last Nov. to 14 minutes in Nov. 2008.

The New York Times was up in time spent per person, as was USA Today. But the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, the Boston Globe and the Chicago Tribune all saw time spent online decrease in November compared to the same month last year.

Overall newspaper website audiences jumped in quarter three, attracting more than 68.3 million unique visitors on average (41.4% of all internet users). That number reflects a 15.8% increase over the same period a year ago, according to a custom analysis provided by Nielsen Online for the Newspaper Association of America.
