‘Meet the Press,’ Minus Russert, Suffers Slow Slide

Published on October 08, 2008 | Email this article

Meet the Press, the show hosted by Tim Russert for 17 years before his death last June, is beginning to slip in ratings.

Last month, CBS’s Face the Nation pulled ahead of Meet the Press for the first time in two years. Though CBS had a large pull with Barack Obama that week, Meet the Press barely managed to take second place ahead of ABC’s This Week, writes The New York Post, which points out that Meet the Press has been losing viewers every week over the last month. In the meantime, rivals on CBS and ABC have seen modest increases.

Network news analyst Andrew Tyndall says viewers are not so much abandoning the show as they are sampling the rest of the Sunday morning news fare.

NBC continues to struggle with a replacement for Russert. Former anchorman Tom Brokaw is hosting for now, and plans to stay through Election Day in November.
