The Washington Post Company is launching an online magazine geared toward a black audience; Henry Louis Gates Jr. will act as the magazine’s editor.

The free magazine, called The Root, will cover news and commentary on politics and culture and will offer tools for readers to research their family histories, The New York Times reports.

The magazine’s emphasis on family and genealogy will help it stand out from competitors such as Ebony, BlackAmericaWeb.com and BlackVoices.com, according to the article. The Washington Post Company hopes the magazine will help expand its online audience.
