FAS-FAX Figures Show Circulation Decline of 2.5 Percent

The first FAS-FAX numbers from the Audit Bureau of Circulations have been released and, as expected, daily circulation declined 2.5 percent; of the top 25 papers, only four showed gains.

Overall circulation for Sunday dropped 3.5 percent, writes Editor & Publisher.

• Daily circulation at The New York Times fell 4.51 percent, with Sunday circulation slipping 7.59 percent. Executives say the decline from a price hike was less than expected.
• Daily circ at the Washington Post was down 3.2 percent; Sunday was down 3.9 percent.
• The Boston Globe’s daily circulation was down 6.6 percent, with Sunday down about the same amount.
• The Wall Street Journal was down just 1.53 percent.
• The New York Post slipped 5.2 percent in daily circ, with Sunday falling 5 percent, while the New York Daily News declined 1.7 percent in daily circ and 6.8 percent on Sundays. It regained its lead in daily circ against the New York Post.
• USA Today showed a gain of 1 percent, while the Los Angeles Times grew 0.5 percent in daily circ. The Times’ Sunday circulation, however, fell 5.1 percent.
• Both the Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News plummeted more than 10 percent.
