Newsweek has snared Viacom veteran Thomas Ascheim to be CEO. Ascheim is credited with having created and launched the successful Noggin on Nickelodeon Digital Television Networks, and most recently has served as general manager of Nickelodeon Television.

He will come aboard in January, writes Mediaweek. Current chairman and CEO Richard Smith will remain chairman of Newsweek. In addition to giving up CEO duties, he will also give up his job as editor in chief.

Ascheim and editor John Meacham will report to Ann McDaniel, a vp of The Washington Post Co., who will serve as managing director of Newsweek.
