XM Satellite Glitch Disrupts Service

Published on May 23, 2007 | Email this article

Some XM Satellite Radio subscribers, mainly in the eastern United States and Canada, had no service for about a day after a software glitch knocked the signal from one of the company’s four satellites.

Problems began around noon on Monday. Service was restored yesterday (Tuesday), writes the AP (via the San Jose Mercury News).

According to a company spokesperson, the company does not know just how many of its 8 million subscribers were affected, but internet message boards indicated the problem was widespread.

David Bank, an analyst from RBC Capital Markets, said the disruption could be an issue for the company and for investors if subscribers begin to turn away from XM. “We’ll have to find out exactly what happened, whether it’s a systemic problem or just a fluke,” Bank is quoted as saying.
