Former ‘Newsweek’ Editor Takes on No. 2 Role at NBC News

Published on May 02, 2007 | Email this article

Mark Whitaker, former editor of Newsweek, has been named senior vice president for news at NBC, making him the No. 2 executive in the news division.

Whitaker will oversee NBC’s editorial and newsgathering work, writes The New York Times. Nobody had been fulfilling those duties on a full time basis since Bill Wheatley left two years ago, according to NBC executives.

Whitaker has no previous experience in television journalism other than supervising NBC’s use of Newsweek correspondence on its news programs, but the president of NBC’s news division, Steve Capus, said he is not concerned about Whitaker’s lack of experience. “His journalism skills are what count here,” he is quoted as saying.

Last September, Whitaker left his position as editor to take on a strategic role at the interactive division of Newsweek’s parent, the Washington Post Company.
