Metro Newspapers Suffer Greatest Losses

For the fifth consecutive reporting period, overall newspaper circulation has experienced steep losses. According to the Newspaper Association of America, for all papers reporting daily circulation, daily circ. fell 2.1 percent and Sunday circ. dropped 3.1 percent.

Some of the steepest declines were at metro papers, writes Editor & Publisher. The Dallas Morning News slipped 14.2 percent during the week, while Sunday fell 13.3 percent. The Miami Herald lost 5.5 percent of its daily circulation and 10.1 percent of Sunday.

Daily circulation at The San Diego Union-Tribune slipped 6.5 percent, and the paper lost 7.2 percent on Sunday. The Los Angeles Times saw a 4.2 percent drop in its weekday circ., while Sunday was down 4.7 percent.

Two of the nation’s largest newspapers saw gains, however. USA Today reported a daily circ. increase of 0.2 percent and The Wall Street Journal grew 0.6 percent.

The New York Times, which usually sees slight gains, lost 1.9 percent of its daily circulation, while Sunday fell 3.3 percent.
